Understanding Gen Z in the Workplace

Generation Z, or Gen Z, refers to individuals who were born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s. They are the future of the workplace. Here is some information about the youngest generation in the workforce and ways to help them succeed.
Purpose
Gen Z wants their jobs to be meaningful: 89% of Gen Z respondents from Deloitte’s 2025 Gen Z and Millennial Survey, which collected data from 14,751 Gen Z workers, believed a sense of purpose was important to their job satisfaction and well-being. And if they don’t feel that their jobs contribute positively to the world, they’ll go elsewhere: 44% of Gen Z from the same survey have already left their jobs because of a lack of purpose. To make jobs more meaningful, corporate purpose should be communicated clearly and used as guidance for business decision-making.
Sustainable business practices
Gen Z is eco-conscious and takes action by choosing to work for sustainable business entities. According to Deloitte’s survey, 70% of Gen Z considered a company’s environmental policies important when evaluating potential employers. To attract and retain young generations, sustainability should be an integral part of business practices.
Continuous learning
Gen Z is enthusiastic about learning: 70% of Gen Z respondents from Deloitte’s survey worked on developing skills that would advance their careers every week. And they are open to different methods of learning and development. The respondents believed the following are helpful tools for their career growth:
· “On-the-job training and practical experience (89%)”
· “Mentoring and guidance from experienced colleagues (86%)”
· “Peer learning and collaboration (84%)”
· “Feedback and performance reviews (82%)”
· “Formal training programs (81%)”
Just shower them withlearning opportunities—they are eager to learn.
Work-life balance
The most important factor when considering a full-time job for 1,177 KPMG US-based interns who are Gen Z was work-life balance. Ensuring work-life balance in the workplace is crucial
for preventing burnout and increasing productivity.
Mental health support
Gen Z may be technologically empowered, but they are emotionally vulnerable. According to a UNICEF survey of 5,567 Gen Z individuals in Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, Switzerland,
the US, and the UK, 67% of young adults in Gen Z felt overwhelmed by news and events around the world, and 52% felt that they needed help with their mental health. To help employees deal with challenges in their personal lives and at work, mental health support could be offered through work.
Financial wellness programs
According to Bank of America’s Gen Z Financial Health report in 2025, which surveyed 915 adult Gen Z workers in the US, 55% did not have enough emergency funds to cover three months of expenses. To help young employees manage their personal finances effectively, financial wellness programs could be offered.
Conflict Resolution Training
According to a Resume.org survey of over 700 full-time Gen Z workers in the U.S. who have used artificial intelligence or AI, 94% used AI to get answers for workplace conflicts. To help young workers navigate workplace issues, conflict resolution training tailored to fit with rules, regulations, and contexts applied to employers could be designed and offered.
Mentoring
According to aResumeTemplates.com survey of 1,000 adult Gen Z workers, parents of Gen Z job
seekers often participated in the job application process in various ways:
· 64% submitted applications
· 51% completed test assignments
· 51% sat in on in-person interviews.
The respondents’ parents also contacted managers on behalf of their adult children: 80% called managers at least once, and 67% more than once. To help young workers navigate work-related
issues, mentors could be assigned to Gen Z workers.
Career coaching
Gateway Commercial Finance collected data from 504 Gen Z workers and found that 58% viewed their jobs as “situationships,” or casual and short-term relationships. In addition, Zety surveyed 896 Gen Z employees and found that 92% reported getting career advice from TikTok. And the popular career advice trends they learned from the platform are:
· Job Hopping (55%)
· Career Cushioning, or exploring other job opportunities while being employed (48%)
· Quiet Quitting,or doing only what’s required at work (47%)
· Bare Minimum Monday, or doing the minimal amount of work on Mondays to minimize stress (42%)
· Act Your Wage, or putting effort at work corresponding with pay level (37%)
· Rage Applying, or applying to many jobs after being frustrated with their current job (21%)
However, 55% of the respondents admitted to following misleading career advice on the platform. To give the right advice regarding advancement opportunities at their current places of employment, career coaches could be assigned to Gen Z employees.
