PsychologicalSafety in the Workplace
PsychologicalSafety in the Workplace
The American Psychological Association collected data from 2,027 employed Americans in 2024
regarding psychological safety, which is defined as the state in which employees feel comfortable enough to express their thoughts or concerns and take risks. Basically, employees who experience high psychological safety feel comfortable bringing up problems or issues, asking for help, and trying out new things. Psychological safety is important for business leaders to understand because it is a prerequisite for an innovative workplace.
The researchers from the American Psychological Association found that employees who experienced high psychological safety tended to have desirable results in the workplace, including higher overall job satisfaction, better relationships with managers, better relationships with coworkers, lower burnout, and lower intentions to leave their current employers. So, now we know that psychological safety is essentially a good thing to have in the workplace, but how do we get there?
The researchers also found that employees who experienced high psychological safety tended to have employers who took the following actions:
· Offering opportunities to give feedback, receive feedback, work in teams, and collaborate with others.
· Allowing employees to participate in goal setting, decision-making, and problem-solving.
· Offering remote working options, meeting-free days, inclusive, low-pressure social gatherings with coworkers, and mental health days.
· Encouraging employees to take breaks throughout the day.
· Providing adequate resources regarding mental health.
· Providing support for employees who are caregivers.
As you can see, psychological safety is something that business leaders should keep in mind and
strive to create a work environment in which employees feel psychologically safe and are able to be productive and innovative.
