How Tata Group Continues to Innovate After 150+ Years
Tata Group, a conglomerate that owns more than 30 companies worldwide, was founded in 1868 in India. After more than 150 years since its founding, Tata Group continues to innovate continuously. Let’s take a look at Tata’s innovation ecosystem, which includes the following components.
· The Tata Group Innovation Forum organizes events such as workshops and seminars that allow outside innovators to interact with Tata associates. The Innovation Forum also runs business-specific innovation centers that facilitate knowledge exchange between Tata employees and outside experts. Examples of Tata’s innovation centers include the Tata Motors European Technical Centre, Tata Steel Europe Research, Development & Technology, and the Tata Chemicals Innovation Centre.
· Tata InnoVerse is a global platform for open innovation. The platform connects Tata’s companies that need solutions for their problems with solvers—those who can come up with solutions for the problems posted on the platform. Proposals must be submitted within the specified timeframe. Then, the winning solvers will be announced and compensated.
· TomorrowLAB Accelerator Programme was founded by TataSteel, IIT Bhubaneswar Research and Entrepreneurship Park, and India Accelerator. The programme aims to support startups with expert guidance, access to funding, and connections to industry leaders. The programme’s focus
areas include water management, waste heat recovery, sensors, robotics, and automation.
· Pitch Day is an event where technology companies present their latest innovations to Tata’s associates. Pitch Day is scheduled approximately once or twice a month. Each Pitch Day is dedicated to a specific topic. Technology companies can submit their information online. If selected, they get to present it to Tata associates who have registered for each event.
· Tata Varsity Pitch is an annual early-stage business pitching competition for college students and recent graduates within five years of graduation. There are five categories for this competition: 1)
Hospitality, Travel, and Tourism; 2) Consumer and Retail; 3) Mobility, Clean Energy, and Infrastructure; 4) Digital and Design; and 5) Community and Social Development. Contestants can submit their proposals online. Finalists in each category will be selected and invited to pitch their ideas in person in London. Each category winner will receive a £1,000 reward. The Varsity Pitch Champion will receive £25,000, while two runners-up will each receive £2,500.
· Innovent Hackathon is a collaborative effort between Tata Technologies and Amazon Web Services that allows engineering students to tackle manufacturing challenges. Each year has a theme; for example, in 2025, the theme was “Innovating the Future of Smart Mobility.” Experts from Tata Technologies and Amazon Web Services will mentor top-performing teams. Winners will receive cash prizes, recognition, functional prototypes, and are eligible for paid internships.
· Tata InnoVista is a platform to recognize and reward innovative ideas. Each year, the awards ceremony takes place in Mumbai, India. Awards are given to both Tata employees and external partners who have collaborated with Tata. Under this platform, there are different categories of awards, including Implemented Innovations, Design Honor, Patented Technologies, Sustainability Impact Innovations, Co-innovate with Partners, and Dare to Try, which are awards for so-called “intelligent failures” or innovative ideas that did not demonstrate results but are worth celebrating for their efforts.
· Tata Management Training Centre Research Insights is a journal that publishes current research conducted by Tata associates and collaborating external experts. The journal helps Tata associates stay abreast of the latest research insights.
Besides building a group of innovative companies, Tata Group is now taking innovation a step further by building India’s first Innovation City in Mumbai, aiming for it to be “a global destination for innovators.”
