Apple’s Innovation Ecosystem: Developing Tools and Resources That Enhance the Capabilities of
Small App Developers
Apple, an American technologygiant, built its innovation ecosystem by launching the App Store in 2008. At the beginning, there were only approximately 500 apps for customers to use. Since then, Apple has continued building a system that empowers small app developers to innovate new apps for its App Store.
By the way, the small appdevelopers are those who earn less than $1 million per year and have fewer than 1 million downloads. In the App Store, small app developers account for more than 90% of all developers.
Currently, there are nearly 2 million apps for customers to use in the App Store. The reason why Apple chose to invest in developing skills of small app developers is because the variety of apps increases the usefulness of Apple’s devices, customer loyalty, and revenue over time.
Here’s the list of tools and resources Apple provided to outside developers.
· Integrated Development Platform is a system that developers can use todevelop, test, distribute, and monitor apps.
· Swift is an easy-to-use programming language that helps novice developers build sophisticated apps.
· The Developer Academy offers courses for learners of all ages and levels, with locations in Brazil, Indonesia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the U.S.
· Pathways offers online tools and educational materials for developers touse.
· Apple Developer Forums create communities of developers where they candiscuss challenges and learn from each other.
· Scholarships provide financial assistance for students to attend the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference.
· App contests allow developers, especially students, to showcase their creativity and skills.
· Apple-supported certifications help validate and upgrade the skills of developers in the ecosystem.
· Mentoring programs provide less experienced developers opportunities to work with technical experts on specific problems.
· The App Store supports 40 languages, 45 currencies, 200 payment methods, and local tax administration, allowing businesses to process payments from around the world.
· Apple-supported security systems review apps before launch, screen for malware, and remove fraudulent developers and users to ensure security and privacy for everyone.
· Small app developers are charged at a lower commission rate, about 15%.
All these tools and resources mentioned here enable the App Store innovation ecosystem to grow exponentially. From 2019 to 2024, the App Store has increased its billings and sales worldwide by 152%, from $514 billion to $1.3 trillion.
What we can learn from Apple’s strategy is that it is important to provide resources and tools that
strengthen the capabilities of outside innovators. Evidently, from this case, the more competent the app developers are, the more revenue they bring to the ecosystem. Everyone wins.
